Search "furnace repair Brockville" or "kitchen renovation Kingston," and before you see any of the regular blue-link results, you'll see something else first: a small map with three business listings underneath it, complete with star ratings, phone numbers, and a "Directions" button. That's the map pack, sometimes called the local three-pack, and it's the single most valuable piece of real estate on Google for a local business.

The map pack pulls from Google Business Profiles, not from websites. It shows Google's top three picks for a local search, ranked by relevance to what was searched, distance from the searcher, and prominence (a mix of reviews, ratings, and general online visibility). Below those three, there's usually a "More places" link that opens the full map with everyone else, which almost nobody clicks.
For searches with local intent, "near me," a service plus a town name, an emergency need, the map pack captures the large majority of clicks before a searcher ever scrolls down to the regular website results. If you're not in it, you're not invisible exactly, you're just competing for whatever's left after the three businesses above you have already gotten the call.
This is the part that catches business owners off guard. A well-built, well-optimized website can rank respectably in the regular search results and still miss the map pack entirely, because the map pack runs on a different set of signals. Your website matters, but it's not what decides map pack placement. Your Google Business Profile is.
Three factors, straight from Google: relevance (does your listing match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the area they specified), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed your business is, both on Google and across the web generally). You can't do much about distance, but relevance and prominence are both things a business can actively improve, correct category selection, a complete profile, an accurate service area, and a steady flow of reviews all feed directly into prominence.
Treating the Google Business Profile as a "set it up once and forget it" task. It's not a business card, it's an active ranking input. Profiles with recent photos, regular posts, prompt review responses, and accurate hours consistently outperform profiles that were claimed once and left alone, even when the businesses behind them are equally good at their actual trade.
Search your main service plus your town from an incognito browser or your phone on data, not wifi tied to your own business. See whether you show up in the three-pack at all, and if you do, where. That single search tells you more about your real local visibility than checking where you rank on your own website ever will.
Getting into the map pack, and staying there, is one of the fastest ways a local business can turn search visibility into actual booked work. It's also exactly what we check first on every Visibility Check we run. If you want the full breakdown of ranking factors, reviews, citations, and how to track ROI once you're in, we cover it in the deep dive linked below.
