Why Your Brockville Business Isn't Showing Up on Google

You type your business name into Google, and there you are, right at the top. Feels like proof everything's working. It isn't proof of anything, because Google already knew which business you meant. You typed the name. That's the easiest search in the world to win, and it tells you nothing about what happens when a stranger types what they actually need.

The Search That Actually Matters

A real customer isn't searching your business name. They're searching "furnace repair near me," "kitchen renovation Brockville," or "IT support Eastern Ontario." That's a completely different contest. Google is now choosing between every business in your category within driving distance, not just deciding whether your homepage exists. This is the search that decides whether you get the call, and it's the one most business owners never actually check.

Why "Ranking #1 for My Own Name" Means Nothing

Ranking for your own name only proves your website exists and Google has indexed it. It says nothing about whether you show up in the map pack (the three businesses with pins that appear above the regular results), which is where most local clicks and calls actually happen. If you've never searched your service plus your town from a browser that isn't logged into your own accounts, you don't actually know where you rank.

Three Things to Check This Week

  • Search your main service plus your town from an incognito browser or your phone on data, not wifi tied to your business. See who shows up in the map pack, and whether you're in it at all.
  • Check your Google Business Profile's primary category. A huge number of local businesses are miscategorized, filed under something generic instead of the specific category customers are actually searching.
  • Confirm your name, address, and phone number match exactly across your website, your Google listing, and any directories you're listed in. Even small mismatches quietly hurt how much Google trusts your listing.
